Birth of the Ark Royal
Photograph of the HMS Ark Royal, taken from the top of Holt Hill in Birkenhead. The ship had just been painted white, as part of preparations for its launch from the Cammell Laird shipyard by the Queen Mother. This is one of Hardman's most famous photographs, which was retouched in order to create such an impressive picture.

Letter from George Stephenson, Liverpool to Robert Stephenson [his son]
George Stephenson reports that he "is giting rapatly on with the tunnel under Liverpool" which is 22 ft. wide and 16 ft. high. He has also done a great deal on Chat Moss according to the plans laid before Parliament two years previously for "cutting and imbanking with the moss..."
