the Emperor's congratulations upon a copy of Lord Bowes' book 'The Keramic Art of Japan' being accepted into the Imperial Library by the Emperor Meiji;
the presentation of a pair of bronze vases being sent to Lord Bowes as a gift by the Emperor in recognition of his work as Japanese Consul in Liverpool;
the presentation to Lord Bowes of two different Imperial Orders by the Emperor (the original orders are still in the possession of the family)
regret at the death of James Bowes in 1899 and sending a collection of money gathered from among the best known political and diplomatic circles in Japan at that time;
the presentation of a pair of cloisonne vases by the Emperor to Mrs Charlotte Bowes upon the death of her husband, in appreciation of his past service |
